Artificial Grass vs Wet-Pour EPDM Playgrounds

Tufted artificial grass vs wet-pour EPDM, compared on safety, design, heat, maintenance, repairability and cost — so you can choose confidently.

When a playground budget can support a premium surface, the decision almost always comes down to two materials: tufted artificial grass with a certified shock pad, or wet-pour EPDM rubber. Both are fully accessible, both certify to EN 1177, and both will outlast a loose-fill surface several times over.

How Each Surface Works

Wet-pour EPDM is a two-layer poured system. A base layer of bound rubber granules provides impact attenuation, topped with a colored EPDM wear layer that gives the surface its color and grip. Both layers are installed wet and cure on site into a single seamless sheet. Critical Fall Height (CFH) is controlled by the thickness of the base layer.

Tufted artificial grass separates aesthetics from safety. The visible layer is colored artificial yarn, tufted through a backing. Underneath sits a certified shock pad that delivers the impact attenuation. The CFH comes entirely from the pad system, which is independently tested to EN 1177 — so the look of the surface and its safety rating are decoupled.

That single architectural difference — color in the yarn, safety in the pad — drives most of the trade-offs below.


Safety and Certification

Both surfaces certify to EN 1177 at comparable CFH values (up to 2.5 m and beyond with the right specification). Neither has an inherent safety advantage on fall attenuation when correctly specified.

The practical difference is how certification is maintained over time:

  • EPDM’s safety layer is the same material that takes daily wear and UV. Over many years the surface can harden or thin, which can erode CFH performance.
  • In a grass system, the wear layer (yarn) and the safety layer (pad) are separate. The pad is protected beneath the yarn and is not exposed to UV or foot traffic, so its attenuation performance is more stable across the surface’s life.

Both should be field-tested to EN 1177 after installation and re-tested periodically.


Design and Visual Identity

This is where the two materials diverge most.

EPDM offers a palette of granule colors — typically 15 to 25 — and can be laid in geometric zones, simple graphics, and game markings. Complex, multi-color artwork is possible but labor-intensive and expensive, because every color boundary is hand-cut and poured separately on site.

Artificial grass is manufactured. Multi-color patterns, educational motifs, branded zones, and detailed designs are produced at the factory by assigning different yarn colors across the tufting machine — at roughly 10 mm resolution. Crucially, the color runs through the full pile, not painted or printed on top, so it cannot peel, chip, or scuff off. For schools, nurseries, and branded leisure spaces that want the surface itself to be a design feature, grass delivers a level of detail and durability of color that poured rubber cannot match.


Heat

In hot climates — Southern Europe, the Middle East, warmer US states — dark EPDM in direct sun can reach surface temperatures high enough to be uncomfortable or unsafe on bare skin. Lighter EPDM colors help but show wear and dirt faster.

Artificial grass with an appropriate infill generally runs cooler than dark rubber, and its color choices are not constrained by heat-management trade-offs. For sun-exposed sites, this is a meaningful point in grass’s favor. (We cover this in depth in how hot playground surfacing gets in summer.)

Both are low-maintenance compared with loose-fill. EPDM is marginally lower-touch day to day; grass is far easier and cheaper to repair locally without a visible scar.


Cost

Installed costs are similar and overlap heavily:

  • Wet-pour EPDM: roughly €70–130/m² installed.
  • Tufted artificial grass: roughly €80–150/m² installed, depending on design complexity.

For a plain single-color surface, EPDM is often slightly cheaper. For a designed, multi-color surface, grass frequently wins on value because the design is produced in the factory rather than hand-poured on site. Over a 10-year horizon the total cost of ownership for both is low and broadly comparable.


Which Should You Choose?

Choose wet-pour EPDM if: you need a proven, ultra-low-maintenance surface with straightforward color requirements, and visual distinctiveness is not a priority.

Choose tufted artificial grass if: the surface should be a design feature — detailed patterns, brand colors, educational markings — and the site is sun-exposed or you want a softer, natural feel underfoot. It is increasingly the choice for schools, nurseries, and premium public and leisure spaces that treat the playground as part of their identity.

Many large projects use both: EPDM under the highest-CFH active zones and grass for the warmer, more visual areas. The two are designed to sit together with accessible, flush transitions.
