How Hot Does Playground Surfacing Get?
Dark playground surfaces can reach skin-burning temperatures in direct sun. Why it happens, how materials compare, and how to keep play safe.
Surface heat is one of the most overlooked playground safety issues — until a hot afternoon makes it impossible to ignore. In strong sun, some playground surfaces reach temperatures high enough to burn bare skin, force the play area to close during the warmest hours, and shorten the day’s usable time exactly when children most want to be outside.
This matters everywhere with hot summers — Southern Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and large parts of the United States. Here’s why surfaces get hot, how the materials compare, and what you can do about it.
Why Surfaces Get Hot
A surface’s temperature in sun is driven mostly by how much solar energy it absorbs versus reflects — its albedo. Dark surfaces absorb more and reflect less, so they heat up far more than light ones. Two surfaces side by side, same material, can differ dramatically in temperature based on color alone.
Three factors compound it:
- Color. Dark colors absorb more heat. A black or dark-blue surface can run far hotter than a light tan or green one.
- Material. Solid, dense materials like poured rubber store and radiate heat. Surfaces with air and structure tend to peak lower.
- Exposure. Full, all-day sun with no shade is the worst case. Orientation and surrounding reflection (light-colored walls, glazing) add to it.
In peak summer sun, dark rubber surfaces have been measured well above air temperature — into ranges that cause discomfort or burns on contact with bare skin, especially for young children at ground level.
How the Materials Compare
Dark wet-pour EPDM and dark rubber tiles are the hottest common surfaces. Their density stores heat and the dark EPDM colors that designers often want are exactly the ones that absorb the most. Lighter EPDM colors run cooler but show dirt and wear sooner.
Loose-fill (bark, wood chip) stays relatively cool because it’s light-colored and loosely packed — but it carries all its other drawbacks (depth maintenance, accessibility, particles).
Tufted artificial grass generally runs cooler than dark rubber. The yarn structure holds air, the green and lighter tones reflect more than black rubber, and the right infill helps moderate surface temperature. It won’t be as cool as natural grass, but for a certified, durable surface it is one of the better performers on heat.
No solid surface stays cool in extreme sun — but color and material choice make a large, measurable difference.
What to Do About It
You can design heat out of a playground at the specification stage:
- Choose lighter colors in sun-exposed zones. Albedo is the single biggest lever. Reserve dark colors for shaded areas.
- Prefer cooler materials where sun is unavoidable. For full-sun sites, a cooler-running surface is worth prioritizing over a dark poured one.
- Design in shade. Shade sails, trees, and canopies over the hottest zones cut surface temperature sharply and extend usable hours.
- Place the hottest-prone surfaces where they get afternoon shade, using the site’s orientation.
- Combine surfaces by zone. Use cooler or lighter surfacing in the open active areas; allow richer dark tones where there’s shade.
- Provide water and seating so children and carers can cool down — a usability measure, not just a comfort one.
A surface temperature check on a hot day should be part of routine summer inspection: if it’s too hot for the back of your hand, it’s too hot for a child’s skin.
