1. Critical fall height (CFH) requirement
EN 1177 — the European standard for playground impact attenuation — requires your surface to absorb the energy of a fall from the highest accessible point of the equipment. A surface that must certify to 1.5 m CFH costs less than one specced to 3 m CFH, because the latter needs a thicker pile or a performance underlay beneath it.
Always get the CFH requirement confirmed by your equipment supplier before specifying the surface.
2. Area size
Smaller areas (under 50 m²) carry higher per-square-meter costs because cutting, edging, and installation labor don’t scale linearly. At 200+ m² most surface types become meaningfully cheaper per unit.
3. Standard vs. custom design
A plain green or colored surface from stock is the cheapest entry point for artificial grass. - Loose-fill needs topping up regularly (typically annually) and raking to maintain even depth.
