How a Custom Playground Surface Is Designed
The full process, from design brief to EN 1177-certified installation — and why a free mockup is the right first step for your play area.
One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we hear from playground buyers — architects, school procurement teams, landscape contractors, leisure operators — is that they didn’t know what they were getting until it was installed.
Standard surfaces are easy to specify because the output is predictable: a swatch of EPDM color, a photo of a rubber tile, a RAL reference. But when the brief calls for something that responds to the specific site, the equipment layout, the brand, or the educational programme — when the surface is meant to be designed, not just selected — the procurement process feels opaque.
This article explains exactly how a custom playground surface gets designed, from first conversation to finished installation. The goal is to make the process legible, so that buyers can brief confidently and know what to expect at each stage.
Why Custom? The Case for a Designed Surface
A standard-color rubber surface fulfils the safety requirement. A designed surface does that and contributes to the character of the space, the way children use it, and how the facility presents itself to its community.
The difference shows up in:
- Photographs. A playground with a distinctive colored surface generates shareable content. Schools post it. Parents share it. Municipalities use it in communications about the neighbourhood. The surface becomes a visual identity asset.
- Play behaviour. Color zones, navigational markings, and pattern layouts shape how children organise play — independently, without adult direction.
- Long-term value. A surface that looks like every other playground in the county ages predictably. A surface designed specifically for the site holds its distinctiveness for the life of the installation.
Custom design is not a premium add-on. It is the right approach when the site has a specific character worth expressing.
Stage 1: The Brief
Good surface design starts with a brief that goes beyond “we want something colorful.” The most useful briefs cover:
The site
- Site plan or photo showing the equipment layout, dimensions, and any constraints (drainage, tree roots, adjacent paving, fencing).
- Equipment types and their maximum fall heights (from the EN 1176 documentation) — this determines the Critical Fall Height the surface must achieve.
- Orientation and sun exposure — relevant for color fading and heat retention in high-UV climates.
The users
- Age range of the primary user group. Surface design for toddlers (2–4) is different from primary-age children (5–11) in scale, complexity, and the cognitive level of any educational markings.
- Any specific accessibility requirements — routes to equipment, transition from hard paving, wheelchair manoeuvring space.
The design intent
- Are there school or facility brand colors to incorporate?
- Are educational markings part of the brief (number lines, literacy paths, world maps)?
- Is there a theme (nature, space, animals, abstract geometry)?
- Are there any existing site features — colors of adjacent buildings, fencing, equipment — that the surface should respond to?
The practical constraints
- Budget range (this shapes the number of color zones and complexity of the pattern, not the safety specification — which is fixed by the equipment).
- Programme — when does the playground need to be operational?
- Whether a post-installation EN 1177 field test is required by the client or their insurer (it should be, and we always recommend it).
Stage 2: The Free Design Mockup
Before any commercial discussion, we produce a design mockup: a rendered visualisation showing the proposed surface design in the context of the actual site.
This is not a generic color scheme dropped onto a placeholder plan. It is:
- The proposed yarn colors, shown at scale on the site’s own dimensions.
- The pattern layout, including how zones interact with equipment exit points, paths, and boundaries.
- Any educational markings, shown in their actual position relative to the equipment layout.
The mockup is provided free of charge and with no obligation to proceed. It exists because we believe buyers should be able to see what they’re commissioning before they commit — and because we know from experience that a single well-made visual does more to advance a genuine project conversation than any amount of product description.
What we need to produce the mockup:
- A photo of the existing play area (or a site plan with dimensions).
- The broad design intent from the brief (colors, theme, any specific markings required).
- The equipment layout, or a rough indication of where the equipment sits.
That’s it. We turn the mockup around within 48 hours.
Stage 3: Design Iteration
The first mockup is a starting point. Most projects go through one or two rounds of iteration:
- Color swaps (the blue that looked right in the brief works better as indigo on the actual ground color).
- Zone boundary adjustments (the number trail needs to clear the swing fall zone by 500 mm — shift it left).
- Marking revisions (the client’s head teacher wants compass points added; remove the world map and add a UK counties outline instead).
Iteration is included. We don’t charge for design rounds — the design service is part of the supply relationship, not a separate fee line.
Stage 4: Technical Specification
Once the design is approved, the surface specification is finalised:
The shock pad The design decision is now fixed. The technical decision — which pad, at what depth — is determined by the CFH requirement from the equipment layout. We select the appropriate pad system (EPE foam, polyurethane foam, crumb rubber pad) to achieve the required Critical Fall Height, and provide the corresponding EN 1177 test documentation.
The yarn specification Each color zone is assigned its yarn type, pile height, and color reference. The tufting pattern — the geometric relationship between color zones, their boundaries, and the backing orientation — is translated into a production file.
The installation specification Subbase requirements, drainage specification, edging type, and transition details are documented. This becomes the technical annex to the installation contract.
Stage 5: Production
Tufted artificial grass is manufactured on industrial tufting machines — the same technology used for high-end carpet production. Individual yarn tufts are threaded through a backing material under tension, row by row across the width of the machine.
Multi-color designs are produced by assigning different color yarns to different needle zones across the machine width. The result is a textile with color changes that are as precise as the machine’s needle spacing — typically 10 mm resolution for our playground products.
Large or complex designs are produced in panels that are joined on site. The joints are invisible in use and are sealed to prevent moisture ingress.
Production lead time is typically 4–6 weeks from design sign-off, depending on factory scheduling and the complexity of the color layout.
Stage 6: Installation
Installation is carried out by a trained contractor (our own installation team or a certified local partner, depending on the project location). The sequence:
- Subbase preparation and drainage verification.
- Shock pad installation — the pads are laid in a continuous layer across the fall zone, jointed and secured.
- Tufted grass panels laid over the shock pad, aligned to the design layout.
- Perimeter edging and transitions to adjacent surfaces.
- Final inspection and brushing.
Installation of a medium-sized playground surface (200–400 m²) typically takes 2–3 days. Weather conditions are less critical than for wet-pour EPDM (tufted grass installation does not require the curing window that poured rubber needs), though we avoid installation in heavy rain.
Stage 7: Post-Installation Field Test
Once installation is complete, a post-installation EN 1177 field test should be conducted by an accredited inspector before the playground is opened to the public. This confirms that the installed system achieves the specified Critical Fall Height under real-world conditions.
The field test report, combined with the lab test report for the surface system and the installation records, forms the compliance documentation package for the operator.
